Annabel Biruete is a registered dietitian and assistant professor of nutrition and dietetics at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and an adjunct in the Division of Nephrology at Indiana University School of Medicine. She obtained her PhD in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Dr. Ken Wilund's lab, where she examined the effects of dietary fiber on the gut microbiota in people undergoing hemodialysis. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine in Dr. Sharon Moe's lab, where she studied the effects of dietary and therapies for chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder on the gastrointestinal tract and the gut microbiome. Dr. Biruete's lab research examines the impact of dietary and pharmacological therapies on the gastrointestinal tract function and its associated microbiome. Annabel is the co-chair of the Education Committee of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism and a member of the Patient Resources Committee, Publication Committee, and Social Media Committee.
